There are over 70 types of different sleep disorders. Many of these contribute to a number of health issues including physical, emotional, and psychological disorders. They can also lead to social and socioeconomic dysfunction. Some typical symptoms are:
Testing for these disorders requires an overnight visit to a sleep disorders center. Most sleep disorders are easily treated and can greatly improve your quality of life. The sleep test or polysomnography is usually covered by health insurance as an outpatient procedure and is completed with an overnight stay in the sleep lab.
What can I expect during my visit?
When you arrive for your sleep study you will be greeted by a specially trained technician. You will be given a tour of the facility and provided with the comforts of home. After you are settled in, the technician will explain procedures to you and then prep you for your nights stay. During the night, the technician will monitor and record the various perimeters from the sensors attached to your body. Before you leave in the morning, you will have a chance to shower and get cleaned up, and then the technician will provide you with follow-up instructions. A sleep physician will review your test and an interpretation will be available for your physician in a few short days.
Some sleep disorders cause obstruction in the airway. When severe enough, this can cause fragmented sleep as well as several health problems. CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure) is the most successful and common method for treating this disorder. This is accomplished by providing a small amount air pressure to the airway, usually through a small nasal or mask device, during sleep. This pressure splints the airway open, preventing it from collapsing, allowing a more restful sleep. It also decreases stress on the body by improving the oxygen supply while asleep.
BiPAP is a form of positive airway pressure that utilizes two levels of pressure. An expiratory pressure splints the airway just like CPAP, while the inspiratory pressure promotes a deeper more restful breath. For some people BiPAP is more tolerable than CPAP alone.
During sleep, some patient's oxygen levels drop to levels that cause stress on the vital organs of the body. This is often due to obstructive sleep disorders which a treated by CPAP or BiPAP therapy, but this is not always the case. At time, supplemental oxygen may be needed due to lung disease.
